Technology Training

I tried to post this as a comment to Professor Luongo's posted article on technology training for teachers, but it could not go through her blog account :) I just want to comment that based on my conversations with teachers as well as personal readings, I would totally agree that there are many teachers who feel they are not confident enough to incorporate technology in their teachings due to lack of training. I find this sad considering how teachers would really like to help develop educated students in this technology-driven society.

I read somewhere that one of the obstacles to teachers use of technology is the lack of release time from school to learn how to use technology. I totally believe that teachers should have access to technology training, otherwise the persence of advanced technologies in the school or the classroom will be useless if teachers do not know how to use and teach them.

Violeta,

Good point!

Another issue that hinders the development of integrating technology in the classroom is the lack of follow-up. Often, teachers are trained to use a program in September and expected to use it throughout the school year. Once in a while there will be a brief follow-up training, but not always. This deficiency in training can deter even the most "techologically-interested" individual.

Thanks for replying!

It is apparent that many districts are in fact striving to include technological aspects into their curriculum. My only problem is that they are not aggressive with implementing the technology. Everyone gives a weak attempt and feels as if they have made steps in the right direction. If districts only put their efforts into technology like they do with standardized testing, I think you would see great improvements in tech. productivity.

Violeta,
It is sad that teachers aren't offered technology training on a regular & consistent basis. They need that in order to become proficient and comfortable in order to incorporate it into the classroom.
